Outside Diameter:
The diameter of a sprocket at it's external circumference -
Pitch Diameter:
The diameter through which the chain pin centers move around the sprocket. This is the area of the tooth that bears most of the load. -
Root Diameter:
Denotes the diameter of the sprocket at the root of the tooth. Tooth height is calculated by comparing the outside diameter with the root diameter. Used only with even tooth count. -
Caliper Diameter:
Denotes the diameter of the sprocket at the valley between two teeth. This measurement is used when the sprocket has an odd number of teeth. -
Bore Diameter:
This is the diameter of the mounting shaft. The sprocket will be bored to suit the shaft diameter. -
Sprocket Width:
Measures the thickness of the sprocket. When measuring sprockets with multiple tooth sets (double, triple, double-single etc.), measure the total width across all teeth. Face width is restricted by load requirements: too thin and the sprocket won't be able to sustain sufficient working load. -
Hub Outside Diameter:
Measures the diameter across the outside of the hub. Minimum hub thickness is determined by required bore size and load requirements. -
Length Through Bore
The total length of the bore, through both the hub and face. The minimum LTB is determined by the required chain load: a sprocket with a bigger LTB will be more stable and have a higher load capacity.
Sprocket Hub Types
Sprockets are available in three standard hub types to fit a variety of drives and load requirements:
A-Hub Sprocket
Also known as "A-plate" sprockets. No hub on either side of the plate.
C-Hub Sprocket
Hub extends from both sides of the plate.
B-Hub Sprocket
Hub extends on one side only.
Multi-Strand Sprocket Configurations
Sprockets can be engineered to operate with multiple chains, or with multi-strand chains in order to increase the maximum working load. DROP Sprockets can manufacture sprockets to fit any configuration of chain strands. Here are some of the most common ones:
Double Sprocket
Operates with a double strand chain. The strands of chain are connected, with a pin that runs through both sets of barrels.
Double Single (DS) Sprocket
Designed to run two single strands of chain simultaneously. The two strands are not connected. More on DS Sprockets here.
Triple Sprocket
Operates with a triple strand chain. The strands of chain are connected, with a pin that runs through all three sets of barrels.
Sprocket Hub Styles & Components
Hubs offer a variety of mounting options ranging from the standard bore + key (BKSS), to friction fit as well as tapered bushing options such as QD, Split Taper, or Taper Lock styles.
Quick Disconnect (i.e. Quick Detachable)
Tapered bushing is inserted into QD hub and is bolted onto the sprocket, providing a friction fit.
Taper Lock
Tapered bushing insert creates a tight friction fit when screws are inserted.
BKSS (Bore, Key, Set Screws)
Sprocket is affixed with keyway and set screws. Simple, ideal for light work applications.
Split Taper
Split taper provides a tight hold on the drive shaft when compressed.
Bushed Hubs
Polymer and brass bushing options can reduce friction and improve wear characteristics for roller chain sprockets.
Split Through Bolt
Split hub with through bolts. Generally nuts and washers are parts of the provided hardware package.
Split Bolt
Split hub with socket head bolts. Hubs are pre-threaded to receive bolts during manufacturing.
Keyless Locking
Assembly
Friction fit insert with hex bolts. Opposing wedges are drawn together by the bolts to provide a secure grip.
